Intervention A

Ensuring supply of High genetic worth goats and Bucks through integrated model of Artificial insemination & Goat kids Nursery by SHG women

Working Mechanism

State already have invested significantly in A.I system for large ruminants through excellent network of infrastructure and field level A.I worker. We propose to train existing A.I worker for A.I in goats and whole concept of breed improvement through following five integrated services –

  1. Selection and registration of high quality goats (Doe) in the field and provide data of its production
  2. Select best bucks, progeny of identified goats with high genetic worth for semen collection and processing – Sheep and Goat Development corporation /Goat Sheep Board may invest to purchase and train such bucks for semen collection and will provide frozen semen to the department on pre decided rates
  3. Perform castration of low quality bucks and prepare them for fattening and sale , which will improve better return to farmers with high body weight gain
  4. Perform A.I in the field in record data, Use USG based Pregnancy diagnosis through camps
  5. Identify progeny from good quality goats and born through A.I for taking it to “Goat Kids Nursery” to be managed as an enterprise by selected SHG members

Scale and Sustainability

We propose in phase 1 , we select and train 300 A.I workers in 5 districts (15 blocks of high goat density and committed professionals)

As per model, A.I worker are already engaged in large ruminants A.I so this will further add to their income and sustainability as number of goats for A.I is almost double the large ruminants and goats will require 2 A.I per year.

Besides A.I worker will be trained as trainer for goat Kids Nursery and will be used as local trainer for supporting Women SHG members in “Kids Nursery management”

Kids Nursery is a self sustaining high economic return business and project will provide assured market for such high genetic potential goats/bucks through using it for distribution to other districts and areas and purchasing from them on live body weight basis.

This will also help State in multiple programs where breeding bucks or goats are required for subsidized distribution to poor families with high quality and assured price to community, making it a win-win combination for the State.

Major Output

  1. 300 A.I worker and 9000 SHG women members will find employment in value chain besides indirect market of feed and input demand rise for goats
  2. Over 90000 high quality goats and bucks (10 kids per Kid nursery) will be ready for distribution on every six months and prices will go to poor goat farmers
  3. Awareness on a new kind of enterprise like “Goat Kids Nursery” will be on rise attracting private players and entrepreneurs to start “commercial goat farming” and with high quality goats , associated business like goat milk value chain, goat meat value chain will have high chances of getting emerged as a result of local availability
  4. A market at National/international level for local pure breeds like “Osmanabadi” and “Sangamneri” , “Konkan” goat breeds will be created once supply in a cluster is assured  under fair pricing system
  5. An easily replicable model for other districts and states will be developed , which can be easily replicated under minimum cost and transform this sector attracting educated youths and professionals to work in goat/sheep value chain.

Non Financial Support required from State Government /Animal Husbandry Department

  • Basic infrastructure at identified Vet hospital for semen storage and one room space for center (May be a chair and table for staff)
  • LN2 container and LN2 Supply (Using present A.I infrastructure)
  • Partnership MoU of this and display board at each Vet center showing partnership project between The Goat Guru, JK TRUST & State Government
  • Help in promotion of program through camps and meetings , Promotional materials of department

Intervention B

Establishing Village level Livestock Trade center, Training existing traders on live body weight goat pricing and technology led trade and linking them with Virtual Livestock Trade & Marketing center  (www.goatguru.in)

Key problems in existing Goat Trade -

  • Livestock trade has been inefficient with high cost of locating buyer and seller
  • Non transparent pricing of goats with special exploitation of female goats
  •  disadvantage to women in pricing and selling goats due to non transparent pricing and male dominance
  • High probability of disease outspread in existing physical trade , difficult to get breeding stock as most of sick and culled animals are traded in meat dominated market
  • Livestock are largely traded in cash , making high burden in cash requirement , this process will promote digital payments and can increase tax revenue to state wherever applicable as well exact data of trade for policy and planning of interventions
  • At present there is no identity of goat traders, No data available of traders and they are devoid of bank loans and other security schemes making this profession manial and derogetaory (Many traders opine not to bring their son/wards to this profession as next generation)

Solution Piloted & Proposition for Scaling Up

  • Training and establishing Village/Gram Panchyat level Livestock trade center on live body based goat pricing and linking them with registered traders with Pashu bajaar
  • Training of Next generation Livestock trader with Mobile based information exchange (App based Data Aggregation) and Web based virtual goat market
  • Improving present small livestock market with infrastructure , information system and health measures

Outcome

  • Estimated 150000 goats/ bucks will be sold through transparent pricing
  • An open competition and quick locating of saleable goats and purchaser will be available reducing indirect cost of transaction and online payment
  • Gender balance in livestock trade and women leadership will be promoted to enable women to create a transparent and fair livestock trade practices
  • Traders will get identity as decent profession and linkage with social security schemes will be established
  • A virtual market will reduce burden on cash transactions, fear of disease outspread and panic to farmers
  • A quality based market is supposed to generate quality consciousness amongst farmers and traders making breeding price incentive linked
